Reading a vintage Canadian pattern

Older Canadian and British patterns use the imperial wire gauge numbers in the third column. A pattern asking for "No. 8 needles" means 4 mm, which is a US 6, not a US 8.

Common questions

What size is a US 8 knitting needle in mm?
US 8 is 5 mm, old UK and Canadian size 6.
What mm is a size 6 knitting needle?
US 6 is 4 mm. An old UK or Canadian size 6 is 5 mm, so check which system the pattern uses.
What is a US 10 needle in mm?
US 10 is 6 mm (old UK 4). US 10 1/2 is 6.5 mm.
Why are old Canadian needle sizes backwards?
Old UK and Canadian numbers count down as needles get thicker, so 14 is 2 mm and 000 is 10 mm. Vintage Canadian patterns use them.
What needles for worsted weight yarn?
The Craft Yarn Council recommends 4.5 to 5.5 mm (US 7 to 9) for medium weight 4 yarn.
Is there a US size for 3 mm or 7 mm needles?
No. 3 mm and 7 mm have no US number, which is why many patterns give millimetres too.
